"We come to be fed spiritually; we are fed so as to serve; we serve in community; in community we are fed. Fostering connectedness is central to our vision and will be an important means of finding and offering hope."

Bethesda Cares: CCPK Prepares Lunch for the Homeless

What do CCPK volunteers do for Bethesda Cares?
On the first and second Saturday of every month Christ Church Volunteers buy supplies and prepare lunches of sandwiches and fruit for the homeless people who participate in the Bethesda Cares lunch program at Bethesda Presbyterian Church at 7611 Clarendon Road in Bethesda. Volunteers deliver lunches before 10.30 am and are welcome to stay and help with the lunch service if they are able.

CCPK Volunteers are needed to expand the Saturday lunch program!!

Who is currently involved?
Currently 17 CCPK individuals/families (plus 8 back-up individuals/families) and 3 youth groups (YAC, J2A and Rite 13) have volunteered to implement this program. The Women of Christ Church also collect and donate toiletries and new clothing for distribution at the On-site center.

Bethesda Cares, Inc. is a community response organization which addresses the problems of the homeless.

Using in-kind donations and a vast of network of volunteers, Bethesda Cares, Inc. leverages their resources to provide Client Services and Community Services.

On-site Client Services

In the drop-in center on Woodmont Avenue, Bethesda Cares provides eviction prevention, an outreach social worker and a job-search center. Available for use by the clients are computers for resume writing and one-on-one job search training, a fax machine, telephone, and photocopy machine. We serve as a mailing address for our clients to receive mail. The drop-in center is the hub of Bethesda Cares activities.

One of our highest priorities is keeping people from becoming homeless in the first place. In cooperation with Montgomery County agencies and as part of the county's emergency assistance coalition, Bethesda Cares offer eviction prevention grants and assistance with utilities to those who are on the verge of homelessness.

The outreach social worker offers counseling, referrals, information, stabilization, and immediate remedial services. Counseling and referrals are provided five days a week.

Bethesda Cares coordinates with local churches and other community groups to provide lunch six days a week, dinner every Sunday, clothing with donated apparel, Medical Care and assistance with prescriptions, and showers plus toiletries, clean socks, and underwear.  Lunch is provided at three area churches: Bethesda First Baptist Church (1-15th), Christ Lutheran Church (16th-end of month) and Bethesda Presbyterian Church for Saturday Lunches. Dinner is provided every Sunday evening at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. The lunch program and dinner program is powered completely by the coordination of volunteers and donated food. Every day, people work together to cook healthy meals.

Bethesda Cares provides a Clothing Center at St. John's Episcopal Church, 6701 Wisconsin Avenue. Clients can select clothes after obtaining a voucher from the Bethesda Cares Drop-in Center

The Mobile Medical Van visits the lunch program each Monday. Volunteer doctors and nurses provide routine examinations and treatment for those who need medical attention. Bethesda Cares provides limited assistance with prescriptions.
Through Community Services, Bethesda Cares strives to help the community learn about homelessness and panhandling. The more the surrounding community understands the causes and ramifications of homelessness, the tighter the community will be.  As an outreach program for the homeless, Bethesda Cares goes out on the street to meet clients. Call Bethesda Cares if you are concerned about an individual.
